That single number should drive every equipment decision in Western Pennsylvania, and this guide shows how to let it. Not with a brand ranking, because the brand matters less than the spec sheet, but with the three numbers that separate a machine that carries a Mount Washington January from one that quietly hands the job to resistance strips at triple the cost.
The Only Question That Matters: Capacity at 2F
Every heat pump has a nameplate capacity, measured at 47F, and that number is nearly useless here. What matters is the published capacity at 5F and at the actual 2F design condition, which manufacturers list in their expanded performance data. A true cold-climate machine holds 80 to 100 percent of its nameplate at 5F. A builder-grade unit can shed a third or more of its output by the teens, exactly when the load peaks.

Below-Zero Headroom, Because 2F Is the Average Worst
The design day is a statistical line, not a floor. Pittsburgh sees actual below-zero mornings, negative five, occasionally worse, in the river valleys and on the exposed slopes. The current generation of cold-climate compressors continues producing meaningful heat at minus 13F and beyond, and that headroom is what a Western Pennsylvania buyer is paying the cold-climate premium for. The machine does not need to carry the whole house at minus ten unaided; it needs to keep producing while a modest backup covers the gap on the handful of nights that dip there.
The Refrigerant Line: R-454B, Full Stop
Every new system installed in 2026 should run R-454B, the current-standard refrigerant. The prior generation is being phased down, its price is climbing, and a bidder proposing leftover older-refrigerant equipment at a discount is selling a machine whose service costs rise every year. This is a one-line check on the quote, and it is not negotiable.
Variable Speed Is the Cold-Market Feature
Single-stage compressors are on-off switches; variable-speed compressors modulate continuously, and the difference shows up hardest in a climate like this one. A modulating machine runs long and low through the shoulder seasons, dehumidifies the valley air properly in July, and ramps to full output as a front rolls down the Ohio. Ducted, Ductless, or Both: Match the Machine to the Stock
The postwar suburbs, Bethel Park, Whitehall, Penn Hills, Monroeville, mostly carry ducts, and a ducted cold-climate changeout is the clean answer there. The older city stock, rowhouses in Lawrenceville and the South Side Flats, foursquares in Squirrel Hill and Highland Park with radiators and no ducts, points to ductless heads or a mixed system: ducted where the ducts exist, heads where they do not. Neither path is better in the abstract; the house decides. What the equipment choice must honor either way is the load calculation, run room by room at 2F.
Sizing: The Rowhouse Discount and the Foursquare Premium
Pittsburgh's stock sizes at two extremes. A party-walled rowhouse loses heat through two facades and a roof, and its real load is small; oversizing it is the most common local error, and it buys short-cycling, poor dehumidification, and wasted capital. The brick foursquare is the opposite case, four exposed sides, tall ceilings, a finished third floor, and it needs every BTU the calculation says it needs. A bidder who quotes both shapes the same tonnage per square foot has not done the work. What the Premium Machine Does Not Buy

Two operating realities deserve a paragraph each before purchase, because they surprise first-winter owners. Defrost cycles are normal: in the damp cold that sits in these river valleys, outdoor coils frost, and the machine periodically reverses to clear itself, steaming briefly like a kettle. A well-controlled defrost is a non-event; a machine that defrosts constantly is usually a symptom of poor placement or airflow, not a defect. Which raises placement: the outdoor unit needs clearance from drifting snow, protection from roof-shed water that refreezes on the coil, and a mounting height above the snow line on exposed lots.
