Pittsburgh is a city of detached houses on steep lots heated by gas: 44% of its 161,908 housing units are single-family detached, 14% attached, 15% in two- to four-unit buildings and 27% in buildings of five or more (Census ACS 2020-2024, table B25024, https://data.census.gov/table/ACSDT5Y2024.B25024?g=160XX00US4261000, checked 2026-10-20), 83% of those units were built before 1980 and 48% before 1940 (Census ACS 2020-2024, table B25034, https://data.census.gov/table/ACSDT5Y2024.B25034?g=160XX00US4261000, checked 2026-10-20), and of the 138,188 occupied homes natural gas heats 75%, electricity 21%, oil under 1% and propane 2% (Census ACS 2020-2024, table B25040, https://data.census.gov/table/ACSDT5Y2024.B25040?g=160XX00US4261000, checked 2026-10-20). The hillside lots that define Squirrel Hill, Mount Washington and the South Side slopes put the outdoor unit above or below the house rather than beside it, so the line-set run is longer than a flat-lot install and the condenser pad or bracket has to account for grade. Nearly half the stock predates 1940, and the brick and frame houses on those hills carry uninsulated walls, single-pane windows and gravity-fed radiator loops that a forced-air heat pump cannot simply replace, so the audit and any sealing or insulation work come before the equipment quote on most Pittsburgh jobs. The gas share is high enough that almost every conversion here is a furnace complement or a boiler complement rather than an oil-tank removal, and the electric share at 21% means one in five homes is already on resistance heat, where the heat pump is a direct efficiency swap with no fuel-switch paperwork.
